Last Updated: November 2025

Agreement to Terms

By accessing and using ScholarCite ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Service.

Description of Service

ScholarCite is a free, browser-based citation generator that helps users create properly formatted academic citations in specialized formats including IEEE, AMA, Bluebook, CSE, ACS, Harvard, and Vancouver.

The Service operates entirely in your browser, storing citation data locally using IndexedDB technology. We provide tools for citation generation, bibliography management, and export functionality.

Use License

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use ScholarCite for personal or academic purposes. You may:

  • Create citations and bibliographies for your academic work
  • Export your citations in various formats (PDF, Word, BibTeX, plain text)
  • Use the Service for educational or research purposes

You may NOT:

  • Use the Service for any illegal or unauthorized purpose
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service
  • Use automated tools or scripts to access the Service beyond normal usage
  • Scrape, harvest, or collect data from the Service without permission
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers hosting the Service
  • Remove, alter, or obscure any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices

No Account Required

ScholarCite does not require user registration or accounts. All citation data is stored locally in your browser. We have no access to your citations or bibliography, and we cannot recover lost data.

Disclaimer of Warranties

IMPORTANT: ScholarCite citation formatting is provided "AS-IS" and "AS-AVAILABLE" for educational purposes only.

  • No Warranty of Accuracy: While we strive for accurate citation formatting, we make no guarantees about the correctness, completeness, or reliability of citations generated by the Service.
  • User Responsibility: You are solely responsible for verifying all citations against official style manuals before submitting academic work. Always double-check your citations.
  • No Liability for Academic Consequences: We are not responsible for any academic consequences (failed assignments, plagiarism accusations, rejected manuscripts, etc.) resulting from citation errors or misuse of the Service.
  • Educational Tool: ScholarCite is a learning aid, not a substitute for understanding citation rules or consulting official style guides.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SCHOLARCITE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY:

  • Indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
  • Loss of data, citations, or bibliography (always export backups!)
  • Loss of grades, academic standing, or publication opportunities
  • Damages arising from use or inability to use the Service
  • Damages resulting from citation errors or formatting mistakes

Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitation of liability, so this limitation may not apply to you.

Third-Party Services

ScholarCite uses third-party APIs to fetch metadata for citations (Crossref, PubMed, arXiv, Google Books). These services have their own terms of use and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or content provided by these external services.

The Service may contain links to third-party websites or resources. We provide these for convenience only and are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of external sites.

User-Generated Content

All citations and bibliography data you create are stored locally in your browser. You retain all rights to your content. We do not claim ownership of any citation data you generate.

You are responsible for ensuring that your use of the Service complies with academic integrity policies, copyright laws, and any applicable regulations at your institution.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

The Service, including its design, code, features, and documentation, is owned by ScholarCite and protected by copyright and intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works without permission.

Citation style formats (IEEE, AMA, Bluebook, etc.) are owned by their respective organizations. We implement these formats based on publicly available style guides for educational purposes.

Data Loss and Backups

Because all data is stored locally in your browser, we cannot recover lost citations or bibliographies. You acknowledge and accept that:

  • Browser data can be lost when clearing cache, reinstalling browsers, or switching devices
  • Incognito/private browsing modes delete data when the session ends
  • We provide export features, and you are responsible for creating backups
  • We are not liable for any data loss, regardless of cause

RECOMMENDATION: Regularly export your bibliography as a backup!

Modifications to Service

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part thereof) at any time, with or without notice. We are not liable for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation of the Service.

Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Termination

We reserve the right to terminate or restrict your access to the Service at any time, without notice, for any reason, including violation of these Terms.

You may stop using the Service at any time. To remove your data, clear your browser's IndexedDB storage or use your browser's data clearing features.

Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable laws, without regard to conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these Terms or use of the Service shall be resolved in accordance with local jurisdiction.

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.

Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and ScholarCite regarding use of the Service.
