Three CSE Systems
CSE offers three citation systems:
1. Citation-Sequence System
Numbers in order of appearance in text. Most common in biology.
Text: "Recent research [1] shows..."
Reference: 1. Smith J. Cell biology. Boston: Academic Press; 2024.
2. Citation-Name System
Numbers in alphabetical order by author surname.
References listed alphabetically, then numbered.
3. Name-Year System
Author-date citations in text.
Text: "Smith (2024) demonstrated..."
Reference: Smith J. 2024. Cell biology. Boston: Academic Press.
Important CSE Rules
- Journal abbreviations: Use ISO standard abbreviations
- Species names: Italicize genus and species (e.g., Homo sapiens)
- Database accessions: Include GenBank, PDB numbers when relevant
