CSE Citation Style Guide

The CSE (Council of Science Editors) citation style is used for biological and life sciences publications.

Organize datasets with QuickParaphrase and refine scientific language via RewritePro .

When to Use CSE

  • Biology research papers
  • Ecology and environmental studies
  • Life sciences journals
  • Agricultural sciences
  • Natural sciences

Three CSE Systems

CSE offers three citation systems:

1. Citation-Sequence System

Numbers in order of appearance in text. Most common in biology.

Text: "Recent research [1] shows..."

Reference: 1. Smith J. Cell biology. Boston: Academic Press; 2024.

2. Citation-Name System

Numbers in alphabetical order by author surname.

References listed alphabetically, then numbered.

3. Name-Year System

Author-date citations in text.

Text: "Smith (2024) demonstrated..."

Reference: Smith J. 2024. Cell biology. Boston: Academic Press.

Important CSE Rules

  • Journal abbreviations: Use ISO standard abbreviations
  • Species names: Italicize genus and species (e.g., Homo sapiens)
  • Database accessions: Include GenBank, PDB numbers when relevant
